What’s the writing prompt generator?
The writing prompt generator is exactly what it sounds like; it’s a tool that will, with every refresh of the page, generate a new prompt including a setting or situation, a character, goal, deadline, and consequence for failure to achieve the stated goal by the listed deadline.
How does it work?
The generator pulls prompts from independent lists of settings, characters, goals, deadlines, and consequences. The selections are made at random using a random-content-generating shortcode.
How should I use it?
Use it to fuel your flash fiction, short stories, poems, novels, scripts, or screenplays!
Sure, some of the combinations the generator spits out will be complete nonsense, but take what speaks to you and forget the rest.
Can I save a particular prompt by bookmarking the page?
Unfortunately, no. If you bookmark the page and return to your bookmark later, the site will generate a new prompt.
To save a particular prompt, I suggest either writing it down manually or taking a screenshot.
I know this is a bummer, but I’m working on a solution. I make no guarantees on when I might find one, but it’s among my many projects to tinker with when I have time.
Can I submit suggestions for new prompts?
Sure, but know I won’t include anything sexually explicit, demeaning to marginalized persons, or that’s edgy for the sake of being edgy. I reserve the right to accept or reject any suggestion for any reason at any time.
“The generator spat out a problematic prompt. What can I do?”
First of all, my apologies. In creating the writing prompt generator, it was my goal to minimize the possibility of problematic or harmful prompts, but with billions of permutations lurking in the ghost of the machine, it’s possible a few less-than-ideal concepts have slipped through the cracks.
If you’re comfortable doing so, please forward me the text of the prompt in question and I’ll work to preclude its generation in the future.
What’s next for the writing prompt generator?
I have some things in mind. Before I jump head first into creating them, however, I want to make sure I got this one right.
